E.P.Oppenheim is always a good observer of human behavior, and sometimes a great one. His description of facial muscles, pupils and eyebrows in sometimes uncanny. He obviously observed his fellows closely and "saw" these movements in his literary characters. The "hero" of this novel, however, is very unusual for several reasons. Oppenheim has almost perfectly described a high functioning autistic personality, almost 40 years before this condition was described in the medical literature. Tavernake is unmotional, unable to sympathize or even understand the most common social situations. He is diligent, precise, obsessive in his persuit of wealth, but oblivious to the feelings of the people around him. They simply don't matter. He meets Beatrice Burnay an American in London without any money. Odd, uncomfortable, almost autistic, He rescues from hunger and possible suicide, and in return she educates him on the possibilities of human emotion.
